Ulster Feile 2005

Sean Treacy's traveled to Coleraine was weekend to compete in the Ulster Feile U-14 competition. The squad was well prepared by manager Aidan Doran, and his assistants Conor Molloy, Bryan Mc Keaveny and Conor Mc Stravick. The team had got its League campaign off to a good start with two straight wins, so they were traveling to Feile with confidence.

Sean Treacy's 3-06     Buncrana 0-07

Sean Treacy's first match was against Buncrana from Donegal .After a nervous start captain Darren Mc Alinden got the boys off to a start with a point from a 65. Midfielder Peter Devlin increased the lead with an excellent long range effort. Buncrana replied with a brace of points and were proving difficult to break down.

Good defensive play by Niall Mc Cann, Matt Leathem and Ruairi Mc Mahon were keeping Lurgan on top .Colm Mc Cavigan's pointed after some good interplay to put Treacy’s back in the lead. Joseph Mc Anerney scored the first goal of the game and the team began to settle.

Simon Doherty, Treacy's keeper was kept busy at times, but dealt well with any threat, making a number of fine saves. Points from stylish midfielder  Brian Martin and a fine goal from Colm Mc McCavigan kept Sean Treacy's in front at all times. The final score from Joseph Mc Anerney, a goal from 30 yards killed the game off. Sean Treacy's advanced to meet Strabane a place in the final at stake.

With a place in the final at stake Treacy’s got of to a nervous start and Strabane stole into a two point lead. Treacy’s were defending well however with Michael Creally and young John Joe Magee particularly impressive. Darren Mc Alinden gave Treacy’s the lead with three unanswered points before Joseph Mc Anerney struck for goal , Sean Treacy's lead 1-03 to 0-02 at halftime.

As Strabane pressed in the second half Treacy’s hit a purple patch with Darragh McStravick hitting three goals. Joseph Mc Anerney again and Danny Magee .The result was assured and Sean Treacy’s used the opportunity to blood some young subs : Cillian Nugent, James Nelson and a fit again Conor McAlinden, how nice it was to see him back in a Treacy's jersey enjoying his hurling after his recent illness, he got a big cheer from his teammates as he took to the pitch.

Strabane kept pressing and broke through for a deserved goal near the end, but further points from Mark Neeson and Aidan Mc Veigh sealed victory and ensured a place in the final.

In the afternoon, the team traveled from Coleraine to Ballycastle to participate in the Feile Parade with the 60 other competing teams .They met Antrim players Johnny Mc Intosh and Carl Mc Keegan before traveling to Cushendall to play Ardoyne Kickhams in the final.

The final was played in the picturesque setting of Ruairi Ogs home field in Cushendall. Sean Treacy's were confident that they could win the final and started well with a Darren Mc Alinden point from a free. But playing with a strong wind Ardoyne, who were much physically stronger began to take control and despite heroics by goalkeeper Simon Doherty, Ardoyne scored 3 quick goals. The full back line of Thomas Mc Kavanagh, Niall Mc Cann and John Joe Magee were kept busy and through sheer guts and determination limited the scoring of the bigger and stronger Kickhams side.

At half time the score was 4-06 to 0-01. The second half commenced in monsoon like conditions, however undampened, Josh Drake pointed to give the team a lift. This was followed by points from Peter Devlin, Niall Lavery, and Colm Mc McCavigan. Kickhams however used their physical advantage to tighten their grip on the match. Good defending by Matt Leathem and Michael Creally repelled Ardoyne. Darren Mc Alinden ended his tournament with another fine point, but it was left to the goal scoring hero Joseph Mc Anerney again to find the back of the net. He finished the day as Treacy's top scorer.

So congratulations to Ardoyne, all but 2 of the panel will be eligible again for Feile 2006 and will hope to go one better. After a long day in North Antrim the team returned home with Finalist medals and high expectations for the season ahead. But a particular mention for Aidan Doran who has worked very hard with this talented group of youngsters, they have the league and County Feile to look forward to.
