Under 14's March ON!

4 June 2005

Sean Treacys 4:9         Lamh Dearg 2:4

Revenge is a dish best served cold and last Saturday Sean Treacys under 14 team gave Lamh Dearg an icy meal.  These same two clubs met in the first match of the 2004 Ulster feile and Sean Treacys came off second best on that occasion.  But since then this Treacy’s team has matured and developed and fully deserved their victory.  What a difference a year makes.Given the tradition of hurling at Lamh Dearg, which has four players in the current Antrim squad, manager Connor Molloy and his young Lurgan squad were up against it.

Sean Treacy’s got off to the best possible start when James Nelson pulled first time and drove the ball into the back of the home team’s net.  It was a lead the North Armagh outfit never looked like losing.  With the half back line of Stephen Holloway, James Martin and Matthew Leathem dominating, the team opened up a comfortable gap.  Thomas McKavanagh playing at full forward ended the game the highest scorer with two goals and a point, narrowly beating Brian Martin who scored 1 goal and three points.  Peter Devlin and Mark Neeson got on the scoring sheet as Sean Treacys began to put Lamh Dearg to the sword.  When the home team did threaten, they ran up against the magnificent combination of full back Niall McCann and goalkeeper Simon Doherty.  Niall McCann got onto the score sheet in the second half with a superb point from distance. A late goal for Lamh Dearg was nothing more than a consolation as Sean Treacy’s proved that hurling is alive and well in Armagh.  Congratulations to the players and manager Conor Molly.  Next week the lads travel to Corrigan Park to face Saint Johns, currently the most successful club in Antrim at underage level.
